Amongst the many reasons to visit the central Aegean islands is that they offer a feast for all of the senses.
The archetypal white architecture, the extremely amenable climate, an abundance of archeological and historical hot spots are all among the many reasons to spend your holidays on these remote .
And let's not forget about the magnificent beaches which some of the smaller islands have!
The islands are dotted with stunning beaches to suit the needs of every tourist, even those who prefer to take advantage of the "clothing optional" rule that some beaches have in place.
Here's a list of smaller central Aegean islands that we recommend.
Alonnisos
Green and lean Alonnisos has the cleanest water in the Aegean, but is out of the way for most travelers. Boasting a rustic hilltop hora (main town) the island is also home to monk seals, dolphins and endangered falcons.
Anafi
Diminutive Anafi maybe a little overshadowed by neighbouring Santorini, but the locals aren’t bothered. They get on with life at their own language pace, quietly welcoming visitors and directing them to south facing beaches.
Angistri
It’s small, it’s petite and inevitably almost entirely overlooked, but Angistri is right next to Athens and it makes for an easy and relaxing day trip from the mainland. Hire a motorbike, have a swim and enjoyed a relaxing fish lunch.
Kimilos
Normally I only have visited by day trippers from neighbouring Milos, overshadowed Kimolos it’s a perfect getaway in its own right. Get off the beaten track and unwind on your own Cycladic hideaway.
Antiparos
Tucked away in the lee of its larger and better known brother Paros, introspective Antiparos is a great antidote to the fast pace of its neighbour. Only twenty minutes by ferry from Paros the island is homely, unpretentious and welcoming.
Danousa
The harbourmaster is not often troubled by ferries in Donousa; and therein lies its charm. A few adventurous campers and naturists come and go, but this is as remote as you can get in the Cyclades.
Kea
It’s hard to imagine that the Cyclades is on Attica’s doorstep, but shy Kea is an easy trip and from the Attica port of Lavrio. Ideal for a weekend getaway without the travel and the crowds.
Sikinos
Dazzled by Santorini? Jump on a boat to recuperate at nearby Sikinos. With sweeping terraced hills and scattered settlements, it makes for the perfect antidote to hide and hubris.
