Dodecanese Travel Guide

Greek Sayings and Quotes
Dodecanese Travel Guide

No better thing befalls a man than a good wife, no worse thing than a bad one.

--Semonides of Amorgos

Getting around the Dodecanese islands without some kind of Dodecanese travel guide could be difficult, but fun perhaps. Some travellers do in fact 'go on the hoof' and plan nothing at all, and if you have the time this can be a very liberating experience in itself.

Getting There

Direct flights to and from Athens can be taken from the Dodecanese islands of:
  • Astypalea
  • Kalymnos
  • Karpathos
  • Kos
  • Leros
  • Rhodes.
Also, Rhodes has flights to:
  • Astypalea via Kos and Leros
  • Iraklio
  • Kasos via Karpathos
  • Thessaloniki
  • Mykonos - summer only
  • Santorini - summer only

Seaplane services fly from Kos and Kalymnos to Lavrio on the mainland.

For those who prefer to be a little more organised, we do our best to provide the most up to date information that we can for the Dodecanese, as we do with most destinations shown on the site.

But please bear in mind that the Greeks are prone to change things, without notice, at the drop of a hat; although it is improving I have to say.

Ferry schedules to the Dodecanese are fairly complex, but they do follow a fairly reasonable, predictable pattern, and variations, I have to be honest, are becoming less and less.

Departure times in both directions tend to be organised so as to ensure early morning arrival times at both Piraeus and Rhodes. So bear this in mind when booking hotels in Dodecanese islands, as it means that island hopping in a southerly direction can often involve some unsociable hours.

However, don't let this notion deter you, it can be an exciting experience, especially for younger travellers, but older passengers will enjoy the comfort of the much recently improved accommodation that's now available on today's more modern vessels.

The information shown below gives a 'bird's eye' view of ferry connections to the Dodecanese islands from the mainland and the island of Crete in the peak season. It is only part of the Dodecanese travel guide and for further information go to the individual 'island' pages.

The service from Alexandrouploi could be subject to seasonal demand, so always check the schedule before making any commitments to travel.
