Greek Islands Real Estate

This is our own little piece of Greek islands real estate that we have decided to sell, as it's now the time for us to move on.

In 2003, my partner was diagnosed with a life threatening cancer; this was on top of two previous, equally serious illnesses (heart problems requiring open surgery and diabetes) he had fought.

For two years, he was treated wonderfully by our doctors, whereby he is now in remission. He hasn't been given the all clear as he has a type of illness which means his doctors are unable to give that kind of positive prognosis.

However, he is now in reasonably good health, the future looks better now than it did five years ago, and we consider everyday to be a 'gifted bonus'.

The gorgeous view from our tiny piece of Greek islands real estate - we are ready to move on! The island of Telendos is on the left - just a short boat trip away!

By 2005, Colin was making progress; he was on the mend, so we decided a holiday was in order, and we chose to re-visit Kalymnos, as it is one of our favourite Greek islands, for many reasons. It's a 'working, living, breathing' island, we adore the people, and the climate is fantastic, which suits us year round.

The front of our holiday home

When you visit Kalymnos, you are right in the thick of it as far as living amongst an indigenous population is concerned.

It hasn't been set up 'just for tourists' as I think some of the islands have been; there are 16,000 people living on Kalymnos throughout the year.

The capital, Pothia, has a real cosmopolitan feel to it, and I've heard it said "when you're looking for something - anything - if you can't get it in Pothia...then you can't get."

We arrived, got settled in and ventured to one of our much loved restaurants, the Aegean Tavern. Upon our arrival, Mikes, (pronounced Mee-kez) came to welcome us as he always does. On this occasion however, we got an extra special reception because we hadn't seen him for a while, and he knew of Colin's illness.

He settled us down at our table, brought us our drinks and we made a selection from his fabulous menu. We were chatting away and he told us of a local builder who was building some Greek islands real estate in the Vigles area; they had superb views and he recommended we take a look.

View from the patio - sunbeds at the ready!

We told him we hadn't come to buy a home, but we would certainly be interested in looking at the houses (I was just being nosy!).

Mikes told us he had one in mind for us, which was perfect as a permanent home for one or two people (it is 70²m), or as a holiday home for a family with children, as it had two bedrooms.

Mikes being Mikes offered to take us up to have a look at the properties at a time which was convenient to us; that's the kind of guy he his!

As promised, he was there, bang on time, a couple of days later and up we went in his 4x4. It was a beautiful day, as usual, and we had the windows opened with the warm September winds blowing in our faces. It felt good to be alive, as we passed the gorgeous view which looked over the island of Telendos and the tiny harbour of Melitsahas.

Within minutes, we were on the building site and as soon as we got into the house, which was only half built at the time, we were blown away by the views. It is awesome, and we knew right there and then, that we wanted this comparatively tiny piece of Greek islands real estate just for ourselves - simply for the views!.

View through opened patio doors while sitting in the lounge area!

The price was right, and we did a deal with the builder who happened to be on the site at the same time. He promised us he would have the house in a livable condition and ready for us to use by December.

A deal was done and we were about to become the proud owners of our very own little piece of Greek islands real estate.

We spent a couple of weeks sorting out the purchase before we left to return home to the UK. We were very fortunate in that we employed the services of a very lovely lawyer called Katerina Riga; she is very experienced in the dealings of Greek islands real estate.

Our living room

The only thing we had to do on our return was make the necessary arrangements to have 80% our the funds transferred to the builder.

We retained 20% until such time as we could return to Kalymnos to see and inspect the completed property.

December arrived and we were ready to put the builder to the test. We called to let him know we were going to arrive in Kalymnos on the 18th of the month, as we intended to have our first ever Christmas in Greece. How could we miss the opportunity to spend Christmas around the fire, in our very own Greek islands real estate?

Stavros, the builder met us at the ferry terminal at about 18:30 pm. It was lashing with rain, and of course it was much colder than the last time we had been there...but still a lot warmer than the UK.

Greek Islands Real EstateFortunately, he had checked us into a comfortable hotel in the centre of Pothia, the capital of Kalymnos. It is called Themelina's, which when we arrived, was very welcoming, warm and cosy - just as you'd expect a hotel to be in 'old blighty' at that time of year!

The following day, we were up early, had breakfast and met Stavros as agreed. Colin and I were like little children on a Christmas morning. We just couldn't wait to get up to the house to see what the 'finished property' was like.

Within 20 minutes we were there. It was a bright, clear, sunny day with wonderful blue skies, and it was quite warm as Stavros led the way through the front door of our new home, and we weren't disappointed. It was everything that Stavros had promised.
