Kalymnos Hotels - Harry's Paradise
As far as Kalymnos hotels go, Harry's Paradise is a place we visit time after time as indeed many people do. We find it very difficult to go to Kalymnos without visiting Harry's place. In fact, we never have.
Harry was a Goliath of a man, both in stature and spirit, and he had the looks of a Hollywood movie star. Unfortunately, he passed away some years ago and although we didn't know him closely, we did consider him to be a friend, for he would always extend the warmest welcome each time he saw us entering the restaurant via the wonderful gardens. What a pleasure it was to see his face come to life as he first saw you; it was like coming home after a long trip away. What a guy!
The hotel was started in 1979 by Harry and his wife Aleka - you can see her here - and from that time it has matured, like a fine bottle of wine, into a place that has to be cherished and enjoyed at a pace that should not be rushed.
Thankfully, it is warming to the heart to know that Evdokia is going to carry on the traditions she has been fortunate enough to receive from her wonderful parents - so Harry's Paradise is going to be around for a very long time yet! This is a blessing to lovers of Kalymnos hotels.
Harry and Aleka started with a vision to build a tiny paradise, and that is certainly what Harry has left as his legacy. There are many who visit the hotel, and all would agree I'm sure, that they did a fantastic job in creating what can only be described as a little piece of paradise here on earth. Some people feel compelled to capture this spirit onto canvas as these artists were seen doing here!
More recently, Evdokia has added her touch of 'design magic'to the rooms and cottage and we have to say she is very creative. Each of the rooms are different, each having its own theme and appropriate name. The personal touches of creativity were all designed by Evdokia; she is very talented.
The rooms, carrying different names are each in character with the designs. Check out some of the photos for details. On the ground floor you will find 'Gemini', 'Spring' and 'The Sea' whilst on the first floor she has 'The Suns', 'Earth' and 'Beach' . They all have a shabby-chic mood about them, you can't help but feel as though you want to spend the rest of your life there, as you enter each one.
All of the rooms are spacious, with large verandas and view to the garden. The ones on the top floor also have full view to Emporios beach, which is 50 m down the road.
The apartments are fully equipped with air conditioning, kitchenette, coffee machine and big, practical wardrobes for your belongings. A daily cleaning service ensures they stay clean and fresh for you to rest in comfort.
Not being people who sit on their laurels, this year, Evdokia and her Mum decided on further improvements and had the bathrooms in every room refurbished and brought right up to date.
The whole place would look right at home in a 'Home and Gardens' magazine; it is so rustic and yet very relaxing. I must say that Evdokia has added a new dimension and feel to the place and I think she should be complemented for what she has achieved. She has succeeded in giving their place a fresh look and feel for this, one of the more established of Kalymnos hotels.
Her next project is a roof terrace, where you have direct views to the beach and wonderful sunsets that happen almost every day. I am certain it will have a charm all of its own once Evdokia touches it with her 'magic fingers'. I think she could be considered the princess of all Kalymnos hotels.
In addition to the comfortable rooms, the restaurant is a place that lulls you into a state of almost utter serenity. Everything about it, is somehow, just right. It is alluring and captivating without being threatening at all.
It's the kind of place you daydream about when you are at work. There is no sense of having to rush to make way for the next guest and the smells from the garden, particularly in the evening are intoxicating. Not all Kalymnos hotels make as much effort as Eleka and Evdokia.
At the end of the garden, you will find the family restaurant. Home cooking by Aleka and Evdokia, with fresh ingredients from the garden make eating here an unforgettable experience.
As a none guest of course, you can have your breakfast with them if you wish! Fresh eggs from the neighbour's chickens, vegetarian dishes, home-made marmalades by Evdokia, and a large menu of variety which changes often, depending on what goodies they find for the day!
Having your own olive trees comes in handy too, since they use their own virgin oil in the kitchen. It makes a simple Greek salad taste like a gourmet's delight!
This Kalymnos Hotel comes highly recommended!
