Kalymnos Restaurants
In addition to the many Kalymnos restaurants, there is quite an array of beach tavernas, cafés and bars.
Quite often you will come across an unassuming little cafe or bar and they will serve the most magnificent selection of snacks or 'starter'; something to fill your tummy, whilst waiting for dinner time to arrive.
I’m adding a few to recommend to you and hope you enjoy my choice.it can be hard to choose the right one, especially if you are only there for a short time.I can honestly say that I have not visited all of them, as much as I would like to, funds do not stretch that far, however, here are some and I hope you enjoy the experience.
Pothia
Thraka Thraka is run by Jordan, one of the sweetest Greek men I have met, and quite a boy for the ladies. His food is great and nothing is too much trouble for Jordan and his staff. From light lunches, tasty snacks, to full blown 2 or 3 course dinners, his food has never disappointed. His prices are great and it can cost from 10 – 20 euros,(2009) including drinks. If you do try him, tell him I said hello! This is a lovely seafood Kalymnos restaurant, overlooking the portside and is very good, it serves up the freshest of fish, and good quality local wine, you can have a leisurely afternoon watching the boats come into the harbour. The Family 'The Family' is a lovely restaurant dedicated to providing a great service to families, as you'd expect, and is visited by the local Kalymnians and is open all day even through siesta.
It is one of the best restaurants in Pothia and well worth spending time there. The menu is excellent and all the food is very well presented and tastes scrumptious. The Family is not on the main drag of Pothia harbour, but just off the main harbour and is situated in a little square, not far from the little kiosk on the front.
Imia
Imia is a simple but great Pizzeria. So fresh, and very tasty, using local produce. The local wine they supply is good too. When you go to Imia you usually meet someone you know because people like it. Barba Yiannis
All my friends tell me that Barba Yiannis on the sea front of Pothia harbour is one of the best Kalymnos restaurants with great food and reasonable prices. I’ll let you know in May on my return to Kalymnos.
Myrties
Noufaro
Noufaro is recommended by a few people, and is a short walk down to Armeos from Massouri. The owner, Eftichia Dikarou is amazing. It is particularly recommended by local Greek people and you can enjoy the special quality and service, also, It's the only Kalymnos restaurant which has won a distinction from E.U. Elias
Marino’s
Elias Square holds a special place in some people’s hearts. A lot of English visit there. There is Marino’s, a daily menu with different dishes on each day, you can also get take away there. I know they do a great day on Sundays and is open all year. I don’t believe they are open much in the evening.
There is also a take away Pizza place but I do not know the name. Again, more info in May.
Linaria
Close to Linaria beach are two local tavernas, excellent for ouzo and seafood I'm told. This is not an area I go to a lot but my friends do and they love it.
Myrties
Aegean
For quite a few years, the Aegean on the bend of the main road in Myrties has been a tavern that is wonderful to eat at and provides excellent value for money. George and Maria have decided that are ready for a change and this season, have moved a little nearer to Massouri, (though still in Myrties) and have taken over what was Igloo.
The Aegean has lost none of its charm and the food is still excellent, Go early to avoid disappointment, it does get rather full.
The Aegean has been taken over by Mikes, (pronounced Meekes) who has worked with George for many years, and the food is still good. The new name will be Archipelago.
 | | The Archepelago in Myrties | Mikes, (pronounced Meekes) has his family to help him and works very hard. At daytime he runs a painting and decorating company and is very hands on. In the summer time all his spare time is wrapped up in the restaurant, and he fulfills his lifelong ambition. If you go, give him my regards. Like a lot of restaurants you will be invited to share some melon after your meal, mmm.. fresh, succulent and refreshing. Argo
Many people like to relax in Argo, in Myrties, it is a nice place and not far from the beach, great to have your lunch before sneaking back to the warm sunbed you left! They do a great hog roast on the spit and I fully recommend it.
Massouri and Massouri Square
Stelios and Maria’s Massouri Restaurant
Stelios and Maria run a great little taverna, friendly, fun atmosphere, and the food is good too! A fab Kalymnos restaurant. The climbers in particular love this restaurant because they are open in spring and early summer when the weather is not too hot to climb. They are located at Massouri Square, and while Maria works hard in the kitchen with her brother, Stelios does ‘front of house’. There are specials on each day as well as the main menu and the fish is always fresh. Prices are very reasonable. It gets a bit busy for later sitting so we usually get in around 7ish. Then we can relax and enjoy the evening. Here is a pic of Stelios and Maria, so that you will recognise them when you say hello.
Kokkinidis restaurant at Massouri Square
This is also a lovely restaurant, and good value for money. It is up a flight of stairs so that you can take full advantage of the fabulous views.
Prego
I also like 'Prego' at Massouri, especially for spaghetti and they do a fab chef’s salad. Prego opened in the 2007 summer season and was a big hit with the locals and visitors alike. This place is one of the newest Kalymnos restaurants and if you like Italian food, its one of the best on the island.
Melitsahas
We were taken to ‘I Drosia’ by Freda and Ian, who are Kalymnian neighbours of ours. It was a lovely balmy evening and we were met with the cackles and laughter and shouts from the parakeet that lived at the taverna. Sadly the parakeet is no longer with us. The food was heavenly, but I've heard the there are new proprietors so not sure if that is still the situation (will let you know). The four of us shared a 24 inch long fish, accompanied by salad and potatoes and drinks a plenty, before moving on to cocktails at nefelis.
The Melitsahas Beach Taverna
This is one of the better Kalymnos restaurants, purely because of the view, the friendliness and the closeness to the beach, and last but not least, value for money. Antonis and his wife Giota now run the restaurant and The food is wonderful and the hosts are really nice. It’s the kind of place that you go for cocktails, coming from the beach before you go home, but you enjoy the relaxed atmosphere so much that you end up staying and watching the sun go down while you enjoy your meal.
Kalamies Bay
Exotic Ambeli
Exotic Ambeli is one of two lovely beachside restaurants and its run by Yanni and his sons, Mum also helps. It is set in an idyllic little cove and if you ever go you will love it. The food is very good and you feel as though you hae gone to paradise. Yanni won't mind me telling you he is a bit of a character who sleeps on the beach and has many stories to to tell you. He sometimes is in charge of watching his grandson, but.., I'm not sure who looks after who!
Emporios
Harry’s Paradise
If you like idyllic gardens and quiet lunches near the sea, this is the place for you. Evdokia and her Mum run this little bit of Paradise and I can honestly say it is one of the most lovely places I have been. The late Harry left a legacy that cannot be matched for tranquility and local fare. If I had to choose my favourite Kalymnos restaurant, this would be my best choice in Emporios, not so much for the food, but for the restful surroundings, and the wonderful people who run it.
Artistico
Artistico is a great Kalymnos restaurant at the furthest end of the island. It is a family restaurant run by Irene and George, and their children. The food is wonderful and the restaurant has a lovely atmoshere. On Sundays they have a music night and it is most enjoyable. It is a bit more expensive than other restaurants, but worth it. This Kalymnos restaurant is right on the beach and the scenery is enchanting.
