Kalymnos Rock Climbing

ATTENTION.
Kalymnos rock climbing is undertaken at your own risk.
All climbers are responsible for taking all necessary precautions to ensure their own safety.

Kalymnos has become a real climber’s paradise in recent years with the most fantastic opportunities to enjoy one of the best climb sites in the world.

This is with thanks to an Italian couple who came to Kalymnos in 1996 and enjoyed the rock climbing so much.

Kalymnos Rock Climbing Country The area of Massouri and Armeos and Skalia benefits from good accommodation very close proximity to the Aegean Sea and its wonderful beaches.

There are also a good climbing houses in Kantouni and the surrounding areas.

Kalymnos Rock Climbing Festival

Kalymnos has a reputation of great rock climbing and the islands Rock Climbing Festival can be enjoyed. The first festival was organized with the help of Kalymnos Municipality in 2000.

Since then, there has been a festival in 2004 and 2006. This is a marvelous event with many world class rock climbers coming to the island to enjoy their favourite pastime, usually in October.

Beginners and World Class Climbers

The joy about climbing in Kalymnos is that it can be enjoyed by both beginners and professional climbers. There are many routes within the famous Kalymnos limestone cliffs.

Some of them are 200 metres high but some are not so high and can be great for early starters. Spring and Autumn are really great to enjoy this sport, but some still like to enjoy it in the summer heat too.

The nice thing about Kalymnos rock climbing is that from spring to autumn, you can still have lovely weather and great swimming, sunbathing and snorkeling.

Rock Climbing Courses in Kalymnos

Rock climbing courses are available, as a five day course and this will include accommodation (for 7 nights) and 5 different climbing routes with professional tutors, on Kalymnos and Telendos (depending on the weather). You must bring your own equipment but the courses have the long ropes etc which can be used. Check before you turn up.

Getting Around

the island's rock climbing activity usually takes place about 7 kilometres from Pothia which is the main port. There are plenty of taxis which will take you virtually anywhere on the island. There is also a local bus route which happily rides along the main routes of the island. You can also hire scooters which are a really great way to get around, just be aware that one or two of the main roads have tight, steep bends, so unless you are proficient on the bikes, hire a car. I only say this because I have come off the bike at least 3 times on the steep climb of the main route so now I have bought a buggy with 4 wheels. Buggies can be hired, but shop around.

Equipment

Most climbers bring their own equipment, but if you forget something or need more climbing equipment, then there is not many places to buy climbing equipment, although you can buy clothing etc. There are shops in Massouri and Armeos that can help you with this.
