Kea, Greek Island, Cyclades

Kea was once the epitome of a traditional Greek Island, with the most beautiful scenery and traditionally small, clean bed, simple and cheap, with a tiny kitchen and sweet smelling garden were you can sit and finish off your glass of wine, before slipping into your fresh white sheets.

Like most other Greek islands, it now offers some superior quality, boutique style, mega hotels, with air conditioning and vast swimming pools; perhaps for some of us, more than you actually need for your get away from it all Greek island vacation, you may have dreamed of all year.

Not everyone is prepared to to travel to Lavrion, the only place on the mainland where you can catch a ferry to Kea, even though it is the closest Cyclades island to Athens. There are no regular boats from Piraeus that go to Kea. However there is a new international airport at Spata being built fairly close to Lavrion and the new ferry area will will have space for all ferries travelling to the other islands. But, give the Keians time to get used to their new found tourism, they are only just coming to terms with the Athenians who visit each summer, they are simple farmers and fishermen and not all will embrace the change immediately.
