Kos Greece...
An Island for Everyone

As far as heavenly Greek Islands go, Kos Greece is one of the best, in my opinion. This wonderful island caters for all tastes, whether you want a lively resort or a quiet place to laze away the days.

A lot of the island is flat, so it is ideal for walking and bicycle riding. Kos has some amazing beaches and most of them are sandy and there's a wide variety of water sports facilities on some of them.

There are hundreds of great tavernas and restaurants and, from Kos Greece you can travel to quite a lot of other island destinations.

The island does have really good hotels and very good basic accommodation so it is ideal for all holiday budgets. Those we recommend are what we have personally enjoyed or come with very good recommendations.

The people here are very helpful and go out of their way to make you welcome. There are some lovely resorts, and Kefalos, Mastachari and the main town are my personal best.

I absolutely love the beach at Mastahari and the surrounding coastal villages, where you can see the boats coming and going from the jetty to other islands.

The beach is clean and the selection of bars, tavernas and restaurants are within a stones throw away. Turkey is very close and is worth a visit to Bodrum for the market, but beware of the Turks aggressive sales techniques, and use the toilet on the ferry or hydrofoil, as the loos in Bodrum market are very, very basic.

Mastichari

Mastichari is an endearing little harbour town, where the ferries come and go to some of the other islands. It has about 6 or 7 tavernas and I have tried them all, many times. There is also a late bar/ night club which is laid back and relaxing, not at all noisy or in your face. The beach is a couple of kilometres long and it's mostly sand with a little shingle. There are two big hotels and several small ones. Most of them are good but I have been in one where I would never go again, unless I was desparate.

Kefalos

Kefalos is an idyllic village with its own beautiful beaches and reasonably good facilities. Also, there are some excellent restaurants and tavernas along with many comfortable places to stay including one or two 5* hotels. Above all it is a very relaxing holiday destination.

Kardamena

Great for the young, free and single, not at all my cup of tea, but 18-30s just love it.

The main town of Kos Greece has its own beautiful harbour, where the most classiest boats to the oldest, typically Greek fishing boats moor up side by side. Along the promenade, all the marvelous restaurants and tavernas ply for your business and promise you the best meal you will ever taste; and most of them are wonderful.

The shopping in Kos town is amazing and you will be able to buy almost all of what you require. There are lots of little supermarkets and jewelers, gift shops and clothes shopping is good too.

The beach is near by and you will enjoy lounging and listening to the children playing; or, you can relax at the swimming pool at your hotel, of which there are some really good 5* or basic but decent studios and apartments.

Car hire is available too, so shop around and get the best deal.If you want a great night life without the rowdy crowds, and a relaxing time, this town could probably meet your needs.

There are other holiday destinations worth a visit, but I'll update soon*.

Things you may not know about staying on Kos Greece

    • Kos Greece is a Christian island so please respect their culture and religious beliefs.
    • The alcohol consumption limit if your driving is much lower than in other parts of Europe so if you are driving, don't drink, cabs are relivately easy to find.
    • Although topless bathing isn't against the law, most Kos locals would prefer it if you didn't do it on public beaches. There are naturist beaches available if you prefer to be without most clothing.
    • Some of the beaches are prone to litter being blown around, this is not as important to some of the Kos Greece residents as it might be to most of the UK population, nevertheless, please discard your litter sensibly!
    • Greek people are quite passionate when they talk to each other, they are not rowing, its just their way of expressing themselves.
    • The locals appreciate it when you try your hand at saying hello and good evening in Greek, give it a go! Efkaristo (thank you)!
