to be found in all of the little villages and ports. Leros is very much steeped in its historical past and that wonderful Greek culture and atmosphere thats lacking in many of the touristy islands. Leros island is tranquil, peaceful and very enjoyable. The little villages of Leros Island are divine and worth visiting each one and enjoying what is has to offer. Agia Marina Agia Marina is the most populated of the villages of the island and has the second harbour on the island swell as a little commercial centre. Although not at all touristy, it is the most visited part of the island. There is a Roman fortress that is worth visiting (Prouzi) which stands on the port. If Christian churches is your thing, there are two wonderful specimens of early Christian churches of Christ the Saviour and Holy Cross. Ancient
Leros history
is amazing and there are many sites which tell the past study of this beautiful island. Alinda Alinda is a charming village with its little white washed houses and narrow alleys. The sandy beach gets a little busy at certain times of the year, but there are quieter coves near by that you can relax and find your inner peace. Alinda has a beautiful castle called Belenis and within houses the town library and radio station as well as an ancient museum. It is also the site for local cultural events held throughout the year. Pandeli There is a fishing village called Pandeli along the south coast from Leros Town (Agia Marina) The fishermens village has some excellent tavernas and will prove to be well worth a visit. The little houses are mostly whitewashed and there are some fabulous windmills to capture on your camera. Platanos Platanos used to be the main capital of Leros and still has its historical and commercial centre for the island. It has one of the biggest natural harbour in the whole of the Med area which is good for bigger ships and yachts who can use the refueling facilities. The village has various coloured painted building reminiscent of the colours used on Kalymnos. Platanos is a very pretty little town and has nice shops and tavernas and some good cafe bars. On the mount of Kasteli there is a large Byzantine Castle, renovated by the Knights of St John and the Venetians. In later years it was used as a military post. The journey up to the ancient monument is amazing with all the bougainvillea floating in the light breeze and covering the whitewashed houses as you walk up th steps. Once there, you overlook the fantastic bays of Lakki, Gournas, Planteli and Agia Marina.
