Mastichari has a wonderful long sandy beach with tavernas dotted on the edge of the sand. Wonderful bars and shops are within a minute from the sandy beach and the blue Aegean is mostly calm and clear and very safe for children to paddle and for you to take your daily dip.
There is a wonderful port with boats that take daily runs to other islands. The local fishermen in their tiny fishing boats chudder into the harbour with their daily catch of delicious fresh fish and shelled marine life; which is soon bought up by the local tavernas and restaurants for their hungry patrons. Watching the sunset is one of the loveliest pastimes while you are still on the beach or harbour or while relaxing with an evening tipple at a portside taverna or cafe bar.
Accommodation
There are really good 5* hotels at this destination and they are well recommended. There are also delightful smaller hotels, most are family run, who work very hard to make their hotel one of the best on the island.
Mastichari Bay Hotel
The Mastichari Bay Hotel has absolutely great facilities. Apart from being right on the beach, this 5* accommodation is special, particularly if you are having a family holiday. Its a great hotel for kids and they will have a wonderful time. The rooms are very well presented and the food is very good and lots of choice. Yes, its not always as hot as it could be, but Greek people don't have their food piping hot, that is our tradition, not theirs. The hotel is only about 10 minutes from the airport across the island.
There is always entertainment for the children and the swimming pool is fab. There is a gym, whirlpool, table tennis, billards and tennis court. The gardens are beautifully manicured and the flowers smell great.
Achilleas Hotel
This hotel is quite new and is quite special. It is classed as an A* and is on the beautiful beach nest to the resort of Mastichari. about 5 kilometres from the airport and has 345 hotel rooms with en-suite facilities and lovely balconies or terrace. There is different entertainment on and a disco on some nights. They also do All inclusive.
The pool is a great size and the pool-bar serves all sorts of wonderful cocktails as well as a regular bar service.
The Waves Hotel, otherwise know as Hotel Kyma
This is a beach hotel in every sense of the word. When we first started going to Waves, it was run by John's Mum and Papa Mammas. Now John and his lovely wife Joanne run the hotel on behalf of the family. The rooms are spotless and there is a large kitchen were you can use all the facilities and there is a roof terrace that overlooks the sandy beach. The hotel is right on the beach and 2 minutes from the main street and all the tavernas and cafe bars. I can't rate this too high, Wave is great and so reasonable.
