Rhodes Greece...
A Colossus of an Island

The Island of Rhodes Greece is one of the largest of the Greek Islands located within the Dodecanese region and is only about 10 kilometres from Turkey. The island has, it is reported, approximately 300 days of sunshine a year and that the sun shines long into the evening, and boasts of mild winters. Rhodes has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful Greek islands. It successfully mixes a cosmopolitan modern present with a rich and ancient past. The landscape is comprised of hills and valleys and has its fair share of forestry. Flights to Rhodes is a comparatively good experience, as it is a fairly modern airport and is recommended by many.

Ancient Rhodes has 2400 years of amazing history, though, whatever you expect from your visit to Rhodes Greece, you will find it, from ancient architecture and historical ruins, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Knights of St John Medieval walls, to fast paced resorts where you can dance, drink and have fun well into the early morning.

There are many resorts and villages in Rhodes Greece to visit and here we mention just a few.

The City of Rhodes Greece

The city of Rhodes is a mix of the old city (Medieval) and the modern city of Rhodes. It's fascinating and full of magnificent architecture; a mesmerising choice of grand hotels through to budget studios; in addition to a huge array of places to eat or maybe simply relax and have a drink at the end of a busy day. But be very careful with your credit cards, there are some irresistible shopping opportunities in the truly 'international' retail outlets.

The Medieval City of Rhodes Greece, is the oldest inhabited city in Europe . It is a mix of shops, cafes and an assortment of imposing buildings. The Palace of Grand Masters was reconstructed by the Italians in 1940 and is a very special place to visit, especially when you enjoy its wonderful, priceless interior design. The old Town is now an acclaimed world heritage site. There are beautiful mosques from the Turk invasion in the 16th Century and the monolithic Byzantine churches.

The Modern City of Rhodes is very majestic with its wonderful yacht harbour of Mandraki. Italian architecture is truly breathtaking as are the Gothic churches. There are wonderful beaches to enjoy and picturesque streets and living sectors with palm trees and lush planting. If you get a chance, take it and go to Rhodes City. When you visit Rhodes Greece, ask about the Colossus of Rhodes.

Lindos

Lindos, Rhodes is on the east coast of the island of Rhodes, and built on the ruins of the ancient town of Doric. The town is dotted with modest 15th century whitewashed houses and lovely, small picturesque courtyards, The diminutive harbour of Agios Pavlos is particularly pretty, named after St Paul who is said to have sailed into the harbour. Lindos is marvellous place for those who enjoy a more laid back venue.

Faliraki

Faliraki is also on the east coast of the island and is a busy, some would say frantic, coastal resort with a good beach. Visitors to Faliraki are usually young, single people who come for the night life, fun and very late bars. Although there is lots of fun things to do, this is not a place to stay if you don’t enjoy this sort of thing. Do not come to Faliraki unless you want wild nights and lots of booze. Having said that, Faliraki has a magnificent themed water park. In fact, it is reported to have been the biggest in Europe at one time, so it is a great place to bring the children for some aqua fun. But, be warned unless you are into raucous fun and 'boozy' laughter find somewhere outside of Faliraki to rest your head.

Afandou

Afandou, Rhodes is about half way from Lindos and Rodos and is 5 kilometres from Faliraki and is a tiny bit further inland. Afandou is one of the oldest villages on Rhodes, Greece and has an abundance of olive groves and fruit orchards.  It has great shops and can supply almost anything you may require.  The village main square is a must to visit and the local people are very friendly and a joy to meet.   There are wonderfully historical old churches to see. To get to Afandou's lovely beach, there is a small train that runs throughout the summer. At the end of the beach are some cliffs and caves that you may like to enjoy.   There is also a small golf club not far from the village, if you enjoy the odd game.

Paradisi

The resort of Paradisi is on the north east which is the windy side of the island, a lot of people like this side of the island for the water sports and swimming in the waves. Paradisi is very close to Rhodes airport. If you don't mind the noise of the planes flying over, the beach is quite nice. The tavernas are typically Greek and the people are very friendly.

Paradisi is close to the Ancient Ruins of Lallisos which is a great place to see if you like ancient Greek culture. In medieval times Paridisi was called Villanova, after the Grand Master Vileneuve, who built a strong fortress here. The ruins still stand at the entrance to the village The village of Paradisi has some really good 2 and 3 star accommodation, studios and apartments.

Petaloudes (Butterflies) Valley

Along the west coast there is a unique valley further inland, where thousands of butterflies congregate. This is a lovely sight to see especially when noise disturbs them and they take to the air in one cloud of colourful wings.

Kalithea

North of Faliraki, there is a place called Kalithea is a great place for underwater swimming.  It is a lovely little bay and once there was a spa built by Mussolini said to have therapeutic powers, the remains of which are still to be admired. Hippocrates was once said to bathe in the soothing thermal waters near the same site.
