Watery Adventures
in The Greek Islands

Watery adventures in the place where summer fun is an adventure to remember. Come enjoy some adventures and family summertime fun in the Greek Islands.

Children and adults alike can enjoy two distinct water playgrounds. Parents can relax in a shady spot while the children play, or join their youngsters for a "splashing" good time. Mums and dads can find something a little more adventurous if that's what they're looking for.

Summer sunshine is beautiful, but it brings with it summer heat. For the whole family, the lazy Aegean offers cool waters and safe sheltered places on the beach for toddlers and small children; after all you want them to have a favourably memorable watery adventure don't you?

Please enjoy the experience under the blue sea water with a minimum of waves, colorful beaches and fishes and see the real beauty of under water life in Greece.

The diving centres offer courses for their customers who wish to get their diving certificate here. Simply, contact us to get your real enjoyable holiday.

Now look at a few of the things the islands have in store for you!

Watery Adventures - Kite surfingWatery Adventures - Kitesurfing

Strap a board to your feet and a thin kite to your waist and you have kite surfing - a new water-sport craze for Greece.

Not for the faint-hearted, it's fast and furious and you can try it at Agios Ioannis on Lefkada or at Mikri Vigla, Naxos.

Kite surfing is one of many popular watery adventures in the Aegean sea because the islands experience summer winds, blowing from the north, called the "meltemi".

However, the intensity varies from region to region. One of the most affected regions of the Aegean is the Cyclades, with two particular islands gaining notoriety for their extraordinary wind conditions; Naxos and Paros both of which attract many kite surfers every year.

The meltemi covers all of the islands from the months of May through to September; it is especially strong and blustery during the months of July and August, providing almost perfect conditions for the holidaymaker.

The Ionian Sea winds which blows during the summer months are called "maistros" and are from the north west. They are less strong and frequent than the meltemi, but in some areas like Vassiliki and Agios Ioannis in Lefkada Island, a thermal wind also offers perfect conditions for Greek kite surfing.

Watery Adventures - Water SkiingWatery Adventures - Water Skiing

If you've got the skill and stamina, slap on a pair of skis and slide your way across the dark blue surf at any number of locations across the Greek islands to enjoy this fine watery adventure.

A good place to learn is on Poros in the Saronic Gulf Islands, a couple of hours' sail from Athens.

Water skiing is a reasonably safe sport. Although it is only safe when you are using common sense and abiding by the rules and etiquette guidelines of those set by the authorities of the area you are using. Please be certain to check these out before entering any water.

Water skiing is harder than snow skiing. You need strong muscles to be able to stay up on water skis. I have been skiing on and off for 14 years now, and I still can't get the hang of water skiing.

Water skiing is a high-speed sport that's fun and a really good way of keeping fit. To start with most people have a go at basic water-skiing.

That means you have two skis and are attached to a boat by cable. The boat sets off, drags the skier across the water and they try to keep their balance. Later some people choose to specialise in different disciplines, like wake-boarding.

Water skiing is a fantastic way to have family fun while enjoying boating, and millions of people do it every day of the year. That said, its not an activity that should be undertaken lightly without a certain amount of preparation and guidance.

It requires some essential skills of both the operator of the boat and the skier; an understanding of hand signals, and it demands continual attention to safety by both parties.

It's the responsibility of the captain of the boat to ensure the safety of their skier and other passengers, so before taking to the water, it's essential to take the necessary time to lay down, and agree upon, some rules between the operator, the skiers and any other passengers in the boat.

Review water-skiing hand signals, and the operator should advise the skier of their plan and where they'll be taking them once they are behind the boat, and discuss what is expected of everyone else on board.

Watery Adventures - Wind SurfingWatery Adventures - Wind Surfing

Where there's wind there's wind surfing and some of the best windsurfing beaches in the world can be found in Greece's sheltered windy waters, especially when the summer 'meltemi' (northeasterly wind) blows in.

It's fast action and you'll need good balance.

Good surf spots (among many) for this watery adventure are on Karpathos and Lefkada.

Windsurfing is an energetic sport which is suitable for all ages especially for those who enjoy the fun and joy of the water; from kids to retirees. It is a hybrid sport that was born out of surfing with the principles of sailing applied. The sail board used for windsurfing could, in its simplest form, be considered a version of the contemporary sailboat.

Steering is achieved by tilting the mast and sail rather than a rudder as used in a boat. On occasion a sail board and mast can be very challenging and unforgiving in the hands of an amateur, but once the required skills are accomplished, it can become an obsessive kind of pastime. The weather in the Greek islands is also perfect for those who indulge in this exhilarating watery adventure.

The wind-surfer will normally stand upright on his board, controlling the sail on a boom to manoeuvre it into the ideal position to catch the wind. Ideally, the surfer needs to find a 'sweet' spot to capture the brisk prevailing winds in order to obtain maximum effectiveness, although it is possible to windsurf in calmer conditions also.

To become skilled at windsurfing, the 'rider' usually needs to understand the basics of both sailing and surfing. The sail operates much in the same way as it does on a sailing boat, requiring both the knowledge of how sails work, and how to work with the wind to achieve a goal, such as gaining or reducing speed, or planning your desired point of destination.

On a precautionary note, windsurfing is a physically demanding watery adventure and is not entirely without some hazards. Those who participate should not lose sight of those demands and the proper safety preparation necessary for their own safety as well as the safety of others who share the waterway.

The windsurfer should guard against falls in shallow waters or anywhere submerged objects may be present. If a fall is unavoidable, try not to fall head first.

Two of the most common types of injuries sustained in falls are: Head injuries from the falling rig. In a fall, raise your hands to protect your head.

Foot entrapment between the board and the rig. Keep your front foot aft (towards the stern) of the base of the mast. It is recommended that appropriate shoes, wet-suit booties or protective footwear be worn to avoid cuts from broken glass or other objects that could be encountered in a fall or while walking the craft in or out of the water.

Watery Adventures - Beach ActionWatery Adventures - Beach Action

Fun and action on island beaches can range from the safe and slow water bikes to more splashy action, such as being towed at high speed on an inflatable banana.

For a gentle swim you'll find many protected bays that are generally wave free.

On the island of Kalymnos where we have our home, there is a really great club on Massouri beach where they have everything required to have a particularly energetic time with all sorts of activities in which many of the locals partake.

Most of the younger crowd gather each day, in between leaving work at 14:00 and returning later in the evening. Visiting girls love this spot as it's where all the younger men go to show off what 'they have'!

Greek islands are reliably safe and children are warmly welcomed. Of course, the safe bathing beaches and vast array of leisure activities makes travelling with your children to a Greek island a real joy, as keeping children happy, excited and entertained is relatively easy.

There are some great child care centres offering Greek snorkeling and scuba diving, watersports and sailing courses allowing you to have a couple of hours to yourself if you wish.
